Brain Tap Headset

braintap-calm-thinking-clearly-efficient-workWhat if you could achieve a level of relaxation and mental clarity without having to spend years trying to practice mediation? While it sounds too good to be true, there is actually a product on the market that can help you achieve this. It’s called a BrainTap headset and in this article, we answer your most commonly asked questions about this product. Continue reading to learn more.

What is a BrainTap Headset?

Created by Patrick K. Porter, Ph.D., the BrainTap Headset is a portable achievement device that offers guided meditation aimed at restoring your brain’s natural balance so users can feel relaxed and rejuvenated. The BrainTap headset does this by simulating the brain rhythms and wave frequencies that produce high levels of deep relaxation.

What are brainwaves?

Brainwaves are electrical impulses in our brain that are produced by neurons. Communication about our thoughts, behavior, and even our emotions travel through these neurons in our brain.

There are five types of brainwaves, all of which occur at different frequencies, or the number of times a wave repeats itself each second. Brainwave frequencies can significantly affect our mental performance. The list below defines the five types of brainwave frequencies. For reference, Hz stands for cycles per second and is the measurement of frequencies.

  • Delta: These are the lowest frequencies, occurring 0.1 to 3.5 Hz. They typically take place during deep sleep.
  • ThetaWe consider these brain waves to be slow (4-8 Hz) and happen when someone is daydreaming, being creative or meditating.
  • Alpha: These brain waves are usually derived from the brain’s white matter, the part of the brain that connects everything together. Occurring between 8-12 Hz, they are associated with maintaining a good mood and staying focused to complete a task.
  • Beta: We describe Beta brain waves as having “fast activity,” with frequencies above 12 Hz and they usually occur when someone is self-aware, feeling anxious or using their judgement to make a decision.
  • Gamma: These brain wave frequencies are the only ones that are found in every area of the brain. With frequencies above 30 Hz, we associate gamma brain waves with high-level thinking and processing information.

How Does BrainTap Work?

The BrainTap headset delivers gentle pulses of light through an LED visor that synchronizes with two different types of sounds through earphones - isochronic tones and binaural beats.  These sounds put users in a deep, relaxed state. Isochronic tones are commonly used for brainwave entrainment, in which your brain waves synchronize with the frequency you’re listening to. These are single tones that occur in evenly spaced intervals.

BrainTap-1-HBStudies on the impact isochronic tones have on stress levels are nothing new. In a study published in 2020 by Christina M. Frederick and David I.K. Moniz-Lewis, researchers investigated the impact isochronic tones set at an 8 Hz alpha frequency on stress levels. During the investigation, participants were asked to wear headphones and listen to a song for five minutes. While listening to the song, participants were asked to keep their eyes open to reduce the risk of relaxation that stems from keeping one’s eyes closed. After the investigation was complete, researchers found the isochronic tones lowered the brainwave frequencies to an alpha state. Someone who is meditating or sitting down to relax is usually in an alpha state.

Binaural beats, on the other hand, are tones that have a slightly different frequency from one other. When you hear two distinct tones in each ear, your brain will process the beat at the difference of the frequencies. A 2005 study published in the Association of Anesthesiologists suggested binaural beats had the potential to reduce presurgical anxiety in patients, however, further studies are needed.

The BrainTap headset combines these sound frequencies with light pulses to stimulate full relaxation of the brain ,all within a 22-minute session.

What Should I Expect From a BrainTap Session?

After putting on headphones, people are usually instructed to close their eyes to fully immerse themselves in the 22 minute experience. During this process, users will listen to music that was specifically designed for BrainTap use. Patients will also see lights coming from the visor which will help their brainwaves shift from a wide-awake beta to a slower, more relaxed state. Some users may experience geometric patterns during this process, similar to what you’d experience when you’re trying to sleep or after you’ve closed your eyes tightly, but this is not a guarantee. Some users lose track of the light completely; it depends on the person.

How Often Should You Use a BrainTap Headset?

You can use the BrainTap headset daily or whenever you feel you need a little mental boost. It’s important to note that because of the increased relaxation that comes with these guided meditations, you should never use this device while driving or while operating any other type of machinery.

Is BrainTap safe?

A BrainTap headset is safe. However, as with any medical device, there are always risks involved. Since this device has gentle pulses of light, individuals who are prone to seizures or have other medical conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, epilepsy or photosensitivity should consult with their physician before using a BrainTap headset. This also applies to children, with records of children as young as five having successfully and safely used the device.

The BrainTap headset is a revolutionary device that has the ability to decrease anxiety and increase your overall mood without having to practice meditation for months or even years on end. While there have been no reports of adverse effects, it’s always recommended to consult with your physician before purchasing this product.
